Team Dynamik High On Confidence For Clipsal
Team Dynamik's Simon Wills would love to hit the rewind tape on 2004 as the Team prepares for the V8 Supercar season-opening Clipsal 500 from 17-20 March in Adelaide. With two young and dynamic drivers suiting up for Team Dynamik in 2005 – Simon Wills and Will Davison - the road ahead looks clear and fast but Wills would like a bit of 2004 to remember.
It was at the hometown Clipsal 500 last March that Wills scorched to his best-ever qualifying position for Team Dynamik, third-fastest that day.
"I had a real weapon towards the end of the second race ... I've demanded that the Team set the car up as we finished the Clipsal last year," he said. That final race in 2004 ended in mechanical dramas but Wills in #44 had already carved through the field before the withdrawal.
"We seem to be able to dial in really well here in Adelaide ... I think
the track is very similar to our test track at Mallala.
"I'm pretty familiar with the circuit, and while turn 8 is a pretty tough
corner I've never hit the wall there, and that part of the track was one of
my strong points last year," Wills said.
"On the AGP performance the engines are as good, if not better, than last year and we're a real chance this weekend."
Teammate Will Davison, at the wheel of the Boomerang Phonecard #45, was brushing up on track maps and videos this week as he prepares for his first ever Clipsal.
The 22-year-old will really taste of the physical demands of V8 Supercar racing this week. Practice and qualifying is Friday, with a 250km race on each of the following two days, in expected hot weather.
"I've got a fair idea of what gears to take, and the racing lines required. We got some good mileage on the car in Melbourne and I got into the rhythm fairly quickly there. I'm setting my goals on a long and successful season with Dynamik and the Clipsal is a great place to start," he said.
Team Technical Director Oscar Fiorinotto had high expectations for 2005, after a strong showing at the Australian Grand Prix non-Championship round last week, and the announcement of namings rights sponsor Boomerang Phonecards.
The two Team Dynamik Boomerang Phonecard VZ Commodores stood out in some fierce midpack battles, and showed the Team was right on track to step up as a Holden challenger.
"We had two virtually brand new cars out there. Will Davison showed plenty of pace, and with some suspension development over the summer we are really confident of going strongly in 2005," Fiorinotto said.
"We're looking forward to some strong home state support in Adelaide,
and to giving them something to cheer about."
