Pace But No Cigar For Orrcon Racing

After narrowly missing out on a berth in the top ten shootout yesterday Larkham – Orrcon Racing’s Mark Winterbottom and Jason Bargwanna showed consistent pace during today’s Queensland 300 at Queensland Raceway.

Bargwanna began the race strongly to pass four cars in the opening lap elevating him into 12th, one spot ahead of Winterbottom in the Number 20 Orrcon Racing Falcon.

While the majority of the field pitted for a tyre change under the first safety car period that was caused when Greg Ritter came to a halt on the entrance to turn one on lap 15 both Orrcon Racing Falcons remained on the circuit.

At the lap 18 restart Bargwanna was in second position with Winterbottom third. Unfortunately the ensuing cars had the benefit of newer tyres than the pair and they slipped down the order.

Winterbottom and Bargwanna were forced to pit under green flag conditions for their compulsory refueling stop on lap 33 and 38 respectively. Due to the difference in strategies the pair were forced down the order even further.

When Jason Richards was involved in a spectacular incident on lap 43 both drivers pitted for the crew to change the rear tyres on the Orrcon Racing Falcons. Bargwanna was able to stay on the lead lap, Winterbottom wasn’t so lucky exiting the pits behind race leader Craig Lowndes.

Bargwanna pushed on to finish 19th. Despite setting times that were comparable to the top five Winterbottom was unable to elevate himself past 26th due to being a lap down on the leaders.

While today’s result didn’t reward the team for their hard work Winterbottom was however a winner over the weekend when he took the victory in last night’s V8 Supercar Charity Karting Challenge held at the Ipswich Kart Club.

Winterbottom won the event over former karting rival Jamie Whincup to claim the $5,000 winners cheque for his chosen charity, CanTeen.

Today’s seventh round of the 2005 V8 Supercar Championship was won by Lowndes ahead of Marcos Ambrose and Garth Tander.

The next round of the Championship will be held at Oran Park on August 12-14.
