Clean Sweeps The Order At Oran Park In Nsw State Championship
It was a weekend of dominance at Oran Park Raceway for Ryan Simpson (Formula Vee), Chris Jackson (Sports Sedans), Layton Crambrook (HQ Holden's), Scott Fleming (Under 2 Litre Improved Production) and David Grant (Clubman Sports Cars), as all five drivers took a clean sweep of their respective categories in the fourth round of the NSW State Championship. The New South Wales Road Racing Club (NSWRRC) sanctioned a healthy crowd who witnessed plenty of action. Over 200 drivers battled it out over 10 categories in total, the outcome: a variety of race winners on the 2.9 kilometre Oran Park Grand Prix circuit throughout the weekend.
With the NSW State Championship really starting to heat up, all five drivers provided themselves with good odds of taking out the 2006 Title in their respective categories after several strong drives. On course for back-to-back wins was 2005 title-holder Simpson.
The most spectacular racing of the weekend came from the Formula Fords and it was come-back racer Rob Storey that relished victory. In his first drive in 18 months, Storey stepped into the Anglo-Australian Motorsport Stealth Van Diemen in a cameo appearance and walked away with pole position and two out of three race wins.
Current NSW Championship leader, Ben Morley took out the second race to finish second behind Storey in race one and three. This also resulted in Morley extending his lead in the overall point standings. Other drivers to get amongst the thick of the action included CAMS Rising Star Kristian Lindbom, Leigh Burgess and Stephen Payne.
In the Formula Vee, teenage sensation Ryan Simpson dominated proceedings by taking out pole position and all three race wins. Racing for minor placings was fought closely between Stephen Butcher and Guy Lingard. Championship contender Adam Proctor suffered a major blow as he failed to finish the third race - the innocent victim of a collision between two other drivers.
Local racer Chris Jackson took out all three races in the Sports Sedans, after archrival Anthony Macready suffered a poor run of luck, which has allowed Jackson to close in on him in the Championship point standings. The likes of Berry Polovic, Steven Shiels and Rama Higgins were amongst the top 3 at various stages over the weekend also.
Former V8 Supercar teen prodigy Layton Crambrook proved he is the cream of the HQ Holden crop by taking out all three races and qualifying on pole position. Despite their best efforts, Kieran Pilkington and Ben Kavich were unable to challenge Crambrook over the three races and had to settle for minor placings.
Other winners over the weekend were Neville Shears (Combined Touring), Bill Pye (Production Sports Cars), Francois Jouy (AF2/Supersports), David Grant (Clubman Sports Cars), Bob Jowett (Under 2 Litre Improved Production) and Scott Fleming (Over 2 Litre Improved Production).
