The Shannons Nationals is pleased to announce the addition of the popular Aussie Racing Cars Super Series to its 2009 schedule.
Round Five of the Shannons Nationals at Winton Motor Raceway and Round Eight at Oran Park will feature the pocket rockets, joining the originally-scheduled Nationals categories.
Weighing in at just 450kg, Aussie Racing Cars are powered by 1.2-litre motorcycle engines producing 125hp, with a space frame chassis and five scaled-down body shapes such as the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon and Toyota Aurion.
Grids regularly exceeding 30 cars put on close, side-by-side racing, with results going right down to the wire.
“We’re excited about having the Aussie Racing Cars join us at Winton and Oran Park,” Shannons Nationals director Rob Curkpatrick said.
“The Shannons Nationals is here to facilitate motorsport at a national level; our structure meant we had the opportunity to accommodate the series.
“The Aussie Racing Cars put on fantastic racing and the class has grown considerably in recent years, they’ll add another great element to these two events.”
In Round Five of the Shannons Nationals at Winton on 27-28 June, the series' first visit to the Victorian circuit, the Aussie Racing Cars will line up alongside the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship, Commodore Cup, Kumho Saloon Cars, V8 Touring Cars and the Formula Vee National Series.
Round Eight will be Oran Park’s final national-level race meeting, with a bumper, seven-category program set to farewell the Sydney circuit in style on 29-30 August.
Formula 3, Australian Manufacturers Championship, Commodore Cup, Saloon Cars, V8 Touring Cars and Kerrick Sports Sedans will be joined by the Aussie Racing Cars.
The Aussie Racing Cars will become the 17th class to race with the Shannons Nationals in 2009.
“The Aussie Racing Cars add to the already diverse mix of categories racing with the Shannons Nationals,” Curkpatrick said.
“At Winton and Oran Park, we’ll have open wheelers, sports cars, tin tops and the Aussie Racing Cars, which are really in a genre of their own.
“There’ll be something for everyone, we’re looking forward to the two rounds and in particular Oran Park - it’ll be a privilege to host the circuit’s last major race meeting.”
Round Four of the 2009 Shannons Nationals will be held at Adelaide’s Mallala Motor Sport Park on 6-7 June.
The weekend will feature the Kerrick Sports Sedans doing battle for the Clem Smith Cup, Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, V8 Touring Car National Series, Kumho Saloon Cars, the Australian Superkart Championship and South Australian Formula Vees.
