Gulf Western Oil backed driver Jonathon Webb couldn’t have hoped for a better way to re-claim command of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series after he dominated the fifth round over the weekend at Queensland Raceway.
Using the term dominated was the only way to describe the performance of Webb throughout the fifth round of the Fujitsu Series on what he regards as his home circuit after he qualified on pole position and won all three races.
As a result of this outstanding weekend, the MW Motorsport driver has now moved back into the lead of the overall Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series point standings with only two rounds remaining.
“I simply couldn’t have scripted the weekend any better, everything just fell into place and it is great not only for my Fujitsu Series aspirations but also my major sponsor Gulf Western Oil and the whole MW Motorsport team who without both of them none of this would be at all possible,” expressed Webb. “I felt confident heading into the weekend and from the first time we hit the circuit on Friday morning we were on the pace and things just got better from there all the way through until the end of the weekend.”
With only two rounds of the Fujitsu Series remaining in 2009, Bathurst in October and the inaugural Sydney 400 in December, Webb and his MW Motorsport are loaded with confidence.
“Over the weekend we stepped it up a few notches and we showed what we were capable of doing and that has certainly boosted our Fujitsu Series chances,” enthused Webb. “All year we have been on the pace and being pretty consistent but now we have found that extra 10% and that has strengthened our Fujitsu Series hopes.”
Webb’s latest victory marks his second of the year and now that he has the Fujitsu Series lead back in his grasp it is something that he doesn’t plan on giving up.
“I have already handed the lead of the series back to David [Russell] and I don’t want to be doing that again,” the Gulf Western Oil supported # 26 BF Ford Falcon driver stated. “Up until the weekend we hadn’t been able to win a race, despite being very consistent and winning round two of the series, and it was good to get that monkey off my back too.”
The sixth and penultimate round of the Fujitsu Series is to be held as part of the annual Bathurst 1000 (Bathurst – Central Western NSW) support races over the weekend of October 8 – 11.
Latest Fujitsu Series point standings (after five completed rounds):
1 Jonathon Webb – 1286 points
2 David Russell - 1258
3 James Moffatt - 1113
4 Grant Denyer - 1072
5 Daniel Gaunt - 930
