Bathurst 12 Hour Munday Busiest Man On The Mountain

There is very little doubt one of the busiest people on the mountain during the Armor all Bathurst 12 Hour race weekend at Mount Panorama will be Bathurst’s Bob Munday.

The proprietor of Panorama Heating and Cooling in Bathurst, Munday will race his 1964 Ford Mustang in the Historic Touring Car Group N races, and double up in his normal role as team manager of the Windsors Automotive Racing team as they chase back to back class victories.

In the Bathurst Historic Group N races, Munday will be up against other Mustangs, Chevy Camaro’s, V8 HQ Holden’s, XU-1 Holden Torana’s, EH Holden’s and smaller cars such as Alfa Romeo, Morris Cooper S, Ford Escorts and GT and Lotus models Cortina’s.

Munday became involved in motorsport as a competitor some ten years back, competing firsts in karts followed by Bathurst Light Car Club events conducted at Mount Panorama when he drove a Cobra replica.

He then started circuit racing in one of the diminutive Aussie Racing Cars, and competed successfully, having his last race in the category at the 2008 Indy GP meeting.

He always had a passion for the big thumping V8, and whilst on holidays in 2008, sitting in a paddock at Alabama in the United States was a 1964 Ford Mustang in very poor condition. However he purchased it and subsequently imported it to Australia.

On its arrival in Bathurst, its proud new owner was the centre of many jokes and jibes from friends and racing colleague’s when he declared he intended to rebuilt and race the run down machine.

However, he now has the last laugh, as the yellow Mustang is in immaculate condition, and has already competed at four race meetings in 2009 under the Windsors Automotive Racing banner.

“Like all of these historic cars the Mustang had its share of teething problems, Matthew

Windsor said. “It got better each outing though as the problems were sorted out one by one, and now its in pretty good shape.

Munday has raced at Mount Panorama previously, that being at the 2008 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, when he and fellow local drive Paul Newman made their Bathurst debut competing in the Aussie Racing Car support events.

Newman is one of the drivers of the #88 Windsors Automotive Racing Subaru along with Matthew Windsor and Steven Shiels in the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour race.

In his role as team manager of Windsors Automotive Racing at the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour race, he has been in charge of the local team and Jim Hunter Motorsport during the running of the three round the clock races since it was reborn in 2007, and has big wraps on his ability to run a team from drivers and team members.

Windsor had the final word on his friend, saying “Bob does a great job as team manager, and really anyone that can turn that old thing he bought back from America into a race car can do anything, and its nearly as good as my Cortina.
